City legend Joe Corrigan has hailed the impressive impact made by Stefan Ortega and says the German has added a further layer of quality to the Club’s goalkeeping department.

A summer signing from Arminia Bielefeld, Ortega was afforded his competitive debut in our Champions League goalless draw away at Borussia Dortmund in late October.

Since then, the 30-year-old has gone on to make two further first team appearances, impressing in both our 3-1 Champions League win over Sevilla and 2-0 Carabao Cup triumph at home to Chelsea.

From his own point of view, goalkeeping icon Corrigan – who made more than 600 appearances for City in an illustrious career spanning three decades – believes Ortega’s impact only augurs well ahead of the resumption of domestic action later this month.

“I think Stefan has really done well - especially considering the fact he hasn’t played a large number of competitive games so far this season,” Corrigan said.

“Yes, he is training against some of the best players in the world day in, day out in training but, for me, I think there is nothing better than playing in competitive games rather than training matches.

“So, I think he has done really well considering his limited time on the pitch.

“I thought he played ever so well in our Carabao Cup win against Chelsea last month.

“I was lucky enough to be there at the Etihad that night and Stefan really impressed me - especially with his agility and his shot-stopping.

“There’s nobody better in the country in terms of using his feet than Ederson and it’s a big part of how we build up from the back.

“Ortega has done well there too but his shot-stopping has been really good.

“That was a big plus for me as they are such key parts of the game. He’s done really well.

“And it’s such a good sign for the team as if anything does happen to Ederson injury wise, we know that we have a competent person ready to come in and do a job.

“Now he’s got to take that forward to his next game and hopefully he can take confidence with him and do another good job.”

Ortega is part of a hugely talented senior goalkeeping trio alongside Brazilian international Ederson and former England keeper Scott Carson too.

Ederson has been City’s established number one ever since joining us from Benfica in 2017.

But Corrigan believes that the role of the vastly experienced Carson, who has been at the Club since 2019, should also not be under-estimated.

“With Scott Carson I was fortunate enough to coach him at West Bromwich Albion and he’s a really top-class goalkeeper and the kind of lad you want in the dressing room,” Corrigan added.

“He is vastly experienced with a good sense of humour and is such a good professional.

“And it’s great for Ortega to have someone like him to be able to go to and talk to and tap into his experience.

“I believe Ederson, and Scott also get on really well too.

“That’s the way Scott is. He is there if you need any advice.

“So, I think there is a nice blend in the goalkeeping department. They all dovetail really nicely.

“I watch them go through their pre-match routines when time allows when I do my corporate duties on matchdays at the Etihad.

“They get on really well and you can see there is a great camaraderie between the three of them.”
