Ex-Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has hailed Ilkay Gundogan as ‘one of the most intelligent players’ he’s ever seen.

And the former defender also signalled his ability to operate in different positions seamlessly for praise.

The 32-year-old played the entirety of our dramatic victory over Fulham - and provided the pinpoint assist to Julian Alvarez’s opener which looked to set us up for victory.

However, with Joao Cancelo’s red card resulting in Andreas Pereira’s penalty being converted, we had to wait until second half stoppage time for Erling Haaland to secure three points from the spot himself.

Lescott, a regular on City’s Matchday Live show, was a pundit on the broadcast for our meeting with Fulham and witnessed the scenes of jubilation at full-time.

And he was in awe of the German’s performance against the Cottagers that arguably flew under the radar.

“I thought Gundogan was exceptional,” he said.

“I can honestly say he’s one of the most intelligent players I’ve seen. The way he plays in all the positions he features in and has an impact is crazy.”

Gundogan became Pep Guardiola’s first signing at the Club in 2016, and has been an instrumental figure for the Boss ever since.

Following Fernandinho’s departure in the summer, he was named Club captain by his teammates ahead of his seventh season at the Etihad Stadium.

And Saturday’s riveting victory over Marco Silva’s side was his 271st City appearance in all competitions.

During that time he’s lifted nine major honours, and was our top goalscorer en route to the Premier League title in 2020/21.

For Lescott, though, he believes the midfielder’s work in-between both boxes is and has been crucial to City’s success under Guardiola.

He added: “He’s an exceptional player but he will always be an unsung hero.

“I think two years ago when he was top goalscorer it was easy to recognise that, but what he does for the team, it’s harder to see because it’s a less glamorous role but he’s so effective.”
