Joleon Lescott says Phil Foden’s ‘obsession’ with football underlines the attacking midfielder’s ceaseless quest to keep developing and improving his game.

The 20-year-old was at his productive and dynamic best once more during Wednesday’s superb 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final win at Manchester United.

Foden has again gone from strength to strength so far this term and has also made his breakthrough with the England senior team as well as thriving with City.

And former City and England central defensive pillar Lescott revealed how he been afforded a first-hand window into the love and motivation that the Stockport-born youngster has for his profession.

“I can’t talk highly enough of Phil’s obsession for football. I loved playing but this guy is obsessed,” Lescott declared speaking on the latest edition of our We’re Not Really Here matchday show

“I worked with the England Under-21s about 18 months ago and they had to ban footballs from the hotel because Phil literally walks around dribbling to the canteen!

“He’s never without a ball to where at training sessions, they have to monitor the extra sessions because he won’t come off the field!

“The fact that he’s playing for the team he loves the most is only great for Man City. We all wanted to be footballers but to do it for the team he loves the most is remarkable.

“When has he not impacted or influenced a game?

“The consistency levels are ridiculous… at such a young age it’s remarkable.”

Lescott’s praise for Foden’s quality and impact was echoed by his fellow guest on Wednesday’s We’re Not Really Here show, Shaun Goater.

The former City strike legend said he was first alerted to Foden’s rich potential at a very early age – and added that he believed the 20-year-old’s vast potential meant he could go on to reach the very highest levels of the game.

“I can’t speak highly enough of Phil,” declared the Goat.

“I used to watch him around the Academy when he was 12/13 and you saw the ability (even then).

“I wouldn’t be surprised in five years if we see him as part of the Ballon D’or conversation.

“He impacts the game, he’s assisting goals and scoring goals but we’re also seeing his ability and agility on the ball to shift and to shake a guy.”
