Joshua Wilson-Esbrand has encouraged City’s Academy contingent to absorb as much as possible on our pre-season tour of the United States.

The versatile left-back was named in Pep Guardiola’s squad for our trip stateside alongside a number of youth team players who will be experiencing consistent senior football for the first time.

While in the US, the Blues will play Celtic, AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea across four states in preparation for the 2024/25 campaign - all of which will be shown live on CITY+.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CITY’S USA TOUR

And Wilson-Esbrand has urged the Club’s fledgling stars to grab the opportunity to work with the current Premier League champions with both hands.

“Just soak it in really. Just enjoy being in that environment, learn as much as you can because you can learn so much from the best manager and best players in the world,” he expressed.

“I always tell people ‘I can tell you as much as I can about it, but you will never truly understand the level of what training or the environment is until you’re in it’.”

City’s 2024 tour of the United States represents Wilson-Esbrand’s second inclusion on first-team pre-season preparations after making the squad for our visit across the pond in 2022.

Since then, he’s made two appearances for Guardiola’s side and enjoyed loan spells at Coventry, Reims and Cardiff across the past 18 months.

Now, he’s relishing the opportunity to showcase his learnings from the Championship and Ligue 1.

He added: “I’m looking forward to it [tour]. I’ve got the relationships with the boys so I’m looking forward to being back in the changing room.

“For myself, just getting back out there, playing football.

“I’ve been away for 18 months or so – it’s good to come back and kind of have a refreshing start or restart for eyes who have seen me prior to say ‘he’s developed here, developed there’.”

During the defender’s spell at Coventry in 2023, he made 14 appearances and helped Mark Robins’ side to the Championship Play-Off final.

A loan to Reims in France followed during the first half of last season before he returned to English football’s second tier with Cardiff in January 2024.

For Wilson-Esbrand, he says he’s already feeling the benefit of adapting to senior football’s rigours over the past year and a half.

“I think my loans for me were just to get used to men’s football. Just to understand different aspects and how different teams play,” he explained.

“For me really developing certain areas I needed to develop and just trying to build and refine the whole package and I think over the last 18 months I’ve done that quite well.

“I feel really good coming into the new season.”
