The Croatian defender came close to giving City the lead in the first half, but it wasn’t meant to be as Gabriel Martinelli’s late deflected shot proved the defining goal of the evening.
Gvardiol, however, is adamant that City will learn from our last two league defeats at Arsenal and Wolves and said the players would draw on both the positives and negatives from the team’s performance in London.
“I cannot say something went wrong – we played good the whole game but maybe not enough,” said Gvardiol.
“We knew we needed to have a lot of patience and calmness on the ball. We were doing good for most of the game.
“Every game we prepare in the best and we were ready for Sunday. We could have done better but it is what it is – it’s behind us.
“We have to be more dangerous in the last third. We will analyse it when we come back from the international break and focus on the next game.”
Gvardiol was deployed at left-back and played the entirety of the match in what his fifth Premier League start since signing for City in the summer from RB Leipzig.
The 21-year-old was also asked for his thoughts post-match on two of City’s senior players, Rodrigo, who missed the game through suspension, and John Stones who came on from the bench for his first Premier League appearance of the season after injury.

“Of course, we are missing Rodri for sure,” explained Gvardiol. “We all know his qualities. He’s coming back soon, and we are happy about it.
“Of course, I’m happy,” said Gvardiol on Stones returning to Premier League action in a defensive midfield role.
“We saw his qualities also in the 15/20 minutes. Really happy about him and for sure he’s going to be one of the key players in the future.”
