Josko Gvardiol is targeting a strong start to new campaign and says he's raring to go ahead of 2024/25.

The defender joined City on the New York stretch of our pre-season tour alongside his Croatian international team-mate Mateo Kovacic, featuring in each of our last two friendlies against AC Milan and Barcelona.

Pep Guardiola’s men lock horns with Chelsea at Columbus’ Ohio Stadium in our final pre-season clash on Saturday, before our competitive season begins on 10 August with the Community Shield final.

Several key players are yet to return to the City Football Academy due to their involvement at EURO 2024 and the Copa America, but Gvardiol’s sole focus is on a positive result to kickstart our season against Manchester United next weekend.

Having started in our last friendly against Barcelona, grabbing an assist for Nico O’Reilly’s equaliser in Orlando, the Croatian added that he’s excited to get back to competitive action.

“I am feeling good, thanks for asking,” the defender told the press ahead of our Chelsea fixture.

“I have done three training sessions and let’s say [close to] 90 minutes, 60 against Barcelona and 15-20 minutes against [AC] Milan.

“I am good and looking forward to being in Manchester ahead of the start of the season.

“We will see [how the full squad return], I can’t talk about that.

“All I can say is that we hope when they come back they will be as strong as we were last season.

“We need to start the season on a high note, especially because there is a final that we want to win. Let’s go day by day and we will see.”

Gvardiol’s first season at City ended with three different pieces of silverware, as he helped the Club retain the Premier League for a record fourth time while also securing our first-ever UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup titles.

Plying his trade in English football was always an ambition of his and, once he adapted to his new surroundings, the defender looks back on his personal campaign with plenty of pride.

He said: “It was not easy but my dream was always to come to England to play in the Premier League.

“So once you get there you jus have to take the opportunity and use it. It was not easy at the beginning but with time you get used to it.

“Especially, being with all the great teammates in our team, they make the job much easier.

“I am very happy with the season I had last year.”
