Argentina were 1-0 victors over Colombia at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida in the early hours of Monday morning, with an extra time goal from Inter striker Lautaro Martinez.
It caps an unbelievable two years since arriving at City in which Alvarez has already lifted the Premier League twice, the Champions League, FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Alvarez played in five of Argentina’s six matches at the Copa America and scored in both games against Canada, including La Albiceleste’s first goal in the competition.
In order to win this newly expanded tournament, Argentina first came through a group with Canada, Chile and Peru before getting past Ecuador and Canada again in the knockout stages.
This latest success sees the nation successfully defend the Copa America title won in 2021, when Alvarez made one appearance.
They are now the most successful side in Copa America history, moving ahead of Uruguay with 16 trophies in total.
Their win also means they’re the first side ever to win successive Copa America titles either side of a World Cup triumph.
After 36 international caps for our striker, Argentina have now won in all but six of the games Alvarez has featured in for his country.
The 24-year-old’s partnership with Lionel Messi at the top of the pitch has proven to unlock the best from Lionel Scaloni’s side, after Alvarez came into the team on a regular basis during the 2022 World Cup.
Our man now has little time to rest, having been named in the Argentina squad for the Olympic Games, which starts later this month.
Everyone at City would like to congratulate Julian on this latest achievement!
