Kolo Toure has described Pep Guardiola as a genius and an inspiration for all coaches.

The former City defender has worked as a coach since retiring from playing six years ago, first with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic and Leicester before a spell in charge of Wigan Athletic.

Toure played under influential managers himself including former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and Mark Hughes and Roberto Mancini during four seasons at the Etihad Stadium.

Now in his eighth season and with 15 trophies secured, Toure says it’s amazing how Guardiola is able to keep the team competing every campaign.

“He’s the biggest inspiration,” Toure said. “The way he sets his team up tactically, the details he is giving to his players, but at the same time, the motivation to keep them performing game after game at the highest level is incredible.

“That is the main thing for me. He is demanding of them and to be able to repeat that. To motivate himself, to motivate his players is a skill.”

After claiming our first Champions League trophy as part of an historic Treble last season, for many people it could be mission completed.

City drew RB Leipzig, Red Star Belgrade and Young Boys in the group draw starting with the Serbian champions on Tuesday 19 September.

But Toure believes that Guardiola will push his players to improve even more and challenge for all trophies again, including the Champions League.

“Of course now it’s going to be a big challenge because everyone was waiting for the Champions League,” the former Ivory Coast international added.

“It’s here now but I have no doubt that Pep will keep the players on top and up there.

“At the same time, a few players have left and it’s important that they replaced them well and keep the standard high because they have unbelievable players. Pep has fantastic tools to work with, fantastic players but he makes players better.

“He pushes them to extra. He pushes them to reach the top level, each of them. When he sees you and he know you can reach that level, he will push you. He will expect them to do a little bit more and that’s what players want.

“Players who work under him, they always praise him because he pushed them to find extra.

“I liked it when my manager pushed me to get better because as humans we like to be relaxed and tranquillo. But if you want to be the best you have find that little bit extra and sometimes it’s in yourself and sometimes it’s the manager that can do that.

“And I think Pep is getting that from each and every player and that’s incredible for me.”

It would be impossible to forget the incredible contribution that Erling Haaland made last season when he hit an incredible 52 goals in his debut campaign for the Blues.

Some pundits questioned how he would be integrated into the team and Toure said that his performance in the crucial game against title rivals Arsenal showed how his importance was more than just goals.

And he offers the frightening prospect that the Norwegian striker and his boss will have been working hard to make an even impact this season, with six goals in six appearances already.

“Haaland has brought another dimension to the team,” the 42-year-old says.

“City always had Sergio Aguero and other good tactically aware strikers but Haaland can bring that long ball on his chest to bring the rest of the team into the game.

“If you look at the key games, Haaland was using his chest making the runs for the counter-attack.

“It was such a great tactic because everyone knows City and that’s why Pep’s a genius. He’s so flexible, knowing when to use different tools and without compromising his identity. This is incredible for me.

“I think Pep is pushing himself and he will push the players. The players are great people. They do their job, they don’t train at 90%, they do their job.”
