Mateo Kovacic’s superb strike against Chelsea has been nominated for the Premier League's Goal of the Month award for August.

The midfielder wrapped up our victory on the opening weekend of the season with the second in our 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

He skipped away from two challenges before hitting a dipping strike that Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez couldn’t keep out.

Kovacic is one of eight shortlisted for the Guinness Goal of the Month award.

Former Academy players Cole Palmer and Liam Delap also make the list for their goals for Chelsea and Ipswich respectively.

Tottenham’s Yves Bissouma, West Ham Jarrod Bowen, Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, Southampton’s Yukinari Sugawara and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde of Wolves have also been nominated.

Kovacic has made a brilliant start to the season in the centre of midfield, particularly with Rodrigo and Phil Foden returning later Euro 2024.

He has started all four of our games this season, including the Community Shield, and has been nominated for the Etihad Player of the Month award along with Erling Haaland and Rico Lewis.

Voting for the August Premier League Goal of the Month closes at 12:00 (UK) on Monday 9 September, with the winner to be announced on Friday 13 September.
