Kyle Walker scored his first goal for England in their 1-1 draw against Ukraine on Saturday evening.

Oleksandr Zinchenko gave Ukraine the lead part way through the second half, against the run of play, before Walker drew things level on the brink of half time.

In his 77th appearance for his country, Walker became the 450th different player to score for the men’s senior England team and has waited the longest to do so.

And the City defender is honoured to have finally ticked off his first England goal as an accolade in his already prestigious career to date.

“It was a relief,” said Walker when asked about what it meant for him to score.

“To represent your country and be as fortunate as I have this many times, it had been on my mind but now I can finally tick it off.”

The experience Walker has gained in his six years with City – where he has won 15 trophies – as well as captaining the Club, provided composure for England at both ends of the pitch.

“I’ve played with H [Harry Kane] for a number of years now and I know he likes to drop deep and spot that run,” explained Walker.

“I saw the gap. I am pleased I could contribute at that end but my main job is stopping goals.”

And Walker did just that. He proved pivotal at the opposite end of the pitch in the closing stages of the game, as he was called upon twice to deny Ukraine’s alarmingly quick Mykhailo Mudryk from any hope of scoring a winning goal.

Despite dropping points in the draw to Ukraine, England remain top of Group C, extending their unbeaten run to five games.

“It is a point away from home. We are in a good position in the group. It was always going to be tough coming here,”said Walker.

“Sometimes you have these nights. We had a lot of possession, we should have created a few more opportunities but this is a good Ukraine side.

“It is fantastic for Ukraine after all they have gone through.”
