Kyle Walker says City’s first goal against Nottingham Forest demonstrated the new attacking responsibility he’s been afforded by Pep Guardiola this season.

The captain’s incisive run in behind the visiting defence was spotted by Rodrigo, with the full-back knocking the ball into the path of goalscorer, Phil Foden.

City would go on to win 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, extending our 100% record in the Premier League with a sixth win in as many matches.

Walker has been at the centre of that success, and revealed how he’s been given greater licence to join the attack in 2023/24; something he’s done to great effect.

“It’s the timing of the run and I know as a full back it’s so hard to stop because you’re looking at the ball and also the player,” he explained.

“I try to do things that I don’t like to the full back on the opposite side.

“It’s a different role that I’m playing this season - I’m a little bit higher up the field where I can go in and get some assists and goals.

“It’s the attacking power we’ve got where I’m wide and I come in and make the deep runs. Hopefully I can keep producing the level of performances I have done.”

City had to dig deep for the win after being reduced to ten men early in the second half when Rodrigo was shown a straight red card.

Walker revealed that the Spanish midfielder apologised to his team-mates in the dressing room after the match and is confident that they will take lessons from the experience moving forward.

He said: “When you’re playing every three or four days, tiredness runs into emotion and that’s something we need to learn from.

“The next four or five moments we’ve got games every three or four days.

“We can’t make the emotion of the game take control over us; we need to keep our heads.

“Rodri said his bit in the dressing room and apologised to the lads. We’ll learn from it and it’s a lesson for everyone that when you’re on the field you’ve got a level of responsibility.

“We move on. These things, you have to learn from.”
