By triumphing in the league last season, en route to the Treble, Pep Guardiola’s side became only the fifth side to win three English top-flights in succession – meaning we began 2023/24 with the tantalising prospect of becoming the first to win four in a row.
Now, with 10 Premier League matches of the campaign remaining, the Blues are once again embroiled in a fierce battle for the title alongside Liverpool and Arsenal.
At present, only one point separates the league leading Gunners and third placed City who sit on 63 points following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Anfield.
And Walker expects this season’s exciting rollercoaster to continue before the curtain finally falls on the campaign.
“It’s exciting to be involved in - as a player, it’s what you want to play in - relishing these opportunities and these rivalries,” the City skipper explained.
“This is why this is the best league in the world - players want to come here, to play and compete in this league.
“We came to [Anfield to] win and put a stance on the Premier League, but the Premier League is not decided by today. There’s so much football and key, important games to play.
“We’ve not lost here - we go into the big period now after the international break and try to clinch these four Premier Leagues in a row.
“It’s great for the Premier League - to have three teams so close, at the top of their game with great players, it’s a great spectacle.
“We need to make sure we’re there and fighting until the end as we always do. To win three Premier Leagues in a row is fantastic but to do four which no one has ever done, that’s what we are striving for - that’s our hunger.
“There’s a lot of football to be played and there’s going to be a lot of twist and turns - as there always is throughout every season. We need to make sure they go in our favour and we’re at the top. We’ll keep fighting.”
City’s latest meeting with Liverpool at Anfield represented the final time Guardiola and Klopp will lock horns in the Premier League with the latter departing Merseyside at the season’s end.
John Stones handed the visitors a deserved lead in the crucial clash before Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half penalty saw the spoils shared in an enthralling tactical battle.
For Walker, he has relished our relentless rivalry with Klopp’s Liverpool and paid tribute to the German and the Blues’ influential Catalan.
He added: “It’s been a special and enjoyable rivalry. When you’ve got two teams fighting for the top - we’ve had some great games over the last number of years - I have to say big congratulations for what he’s [Klopp] done.
“In all these big games, it’s like a chess match. You take the advantage in certain parts; they take the advantage in certain parts.
“For the neutrals, it’s obviously a great spectacle and always a good game when these two clubs play each other. We came here to get the three points, but we’ll take the point and move on now.
“What he’s [Guardiola] done and the clubs he’s managed and the players he’s been able to coach, he’s nothing short of being a genius.
“That’s ultimately down to the work ethic he puts into the matches, the training sessions and the detail - we just have to execute the plan.”
