Kyle Walker’s equaliser, and his first for England in his 77th appearance, meant the EUROs qualifying points were shared with Ukraine on Saturday evening.

Gareth Southgate’s side overcame a one goal deficit to draw 1-1 with Serhiy Rebrov’s team with Walker’s City teammate Phil Foden also featuring as a substitute.

It was a frustrating opening 25 minutes for England who dominated possession but couldn’t register a shot on target.

And in turn, the hosts took advantage of the fresh England centre-back pairing of Harry Maguire and Marc Guehi as England struggled to defend Ukraine’s first attack.

Yukhym Konoplya made a dangerous run to the byline before crossing the ball into the centre of Jordan Pickford’s box. The ball was met by Oleksandr Zinchenko who fired the ball into the back of the net with his first touch.

The Arsenal defender’s goal, in the 26th minute, was Ukraine’s first shot on target and it sent the Ukraine fans inside the Stadion Miejski Wroclaw into a frenzy.

England needed a spark of inspiration. Captain Harry Kane’s lobbed pass into the box was difficult for Ukraine’s defensive line to clear.

Instead, it was met by a lightning quick Walker whose first touch allowed him to watch the ball fall kindly in front of him before nudging it past goalkeeper Heorhii Bushchan four minutes before half-time.

When the two teams returned for the second 45 minutes, England continued to dominate possession, but Ukraine remained organised and defended in numbers.

Foden provided fresh legs in England’s attacking three, replacing James Maddison in the 66th minute, as both teams still searched for a match-winning goal.

With 10 minutes left to play, Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk had a glimmer of hope he would give Ukraine their third win of the qualifiers. His remarkable pace, however, was met by Walker who nullified Ukraine’s attack with ease.

England had a handful of set pieces that Southgate’s men tried to capitalise on but nothing could come to fruition as the full-time whistle rang round the stadium.

Elsewhere, Jeremy Doku featured as a substitute in Belgium’s 1-0 win over Azerbaijan. The young Red Devil featured for 24 minutes as he took to the pitch for the 15th time as he continues to gain valuable international experience.

England’s next international fixture sees them travel to Hampden Park for a friendly against Scotland on Tuesday 12 September, with kick-off scheduled for 19:45 (UK).

Doku and Belgium will welcome Estonia to the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels for their second EUROs qualifiers of the international break. They will also play on Tuesday at 19:45 (UK).
