Pep Guardiola has made three changes to the side that beat West Ham United on Wednesday for today’s game against Leicester.

Nicolas Otamendi, David Silva and Gabriel Jesus all drop to the bench, with Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez back in the XI.

Aymeric Laporte starts again as he looks to return to his best form after a long period on the sidelines.

Raheem Sterling remains out after failing to fully recover from the hamstring injury he suffered at Tottenham three weeks ago, and Leroy Sane still needs more time to find match sharpness after six months out.

City tactics

It’s 4-3-3 for City, with the focus, as ever, on dominating possession and playing on the front foot.

Ederson starst in goal, with Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte paired together at centre-half. Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy will be charged with getting forward from full-back and adding wisth to our attack.

Rodri will sit in the holding role just ahead of the back four, with Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne ahead of his providing guile.

And our front three sees Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez in support of Sergio Aguero.

Guardiola spoke on Friday about the threat posed by Jamie Vardy, who has an exceptional goalscoring record against us. Our high defensive line allows plenty of space for Vardy to run in behind, and with his pace and clinical finishing, it’s an approach that he can exploit. His five goals in his last seven league appearances against City are testament to his quality.

Minimising his threat will be important.

Leicester team

XI: Schmeichel, Ricardo, Evans, Soyuncu, Fuchs, Chilwell, Praet, Tielemans, Maddison, Iheanacho, Vardy

Subs: Ward, Justin, Morgan, James, Albrighton, Pérez, Barnes

Stats

Head-to-head

This will be the 100th league match between the sides.

Leicester beat Manchester City at home last season but have lost five of the past six league meetings.

Pep Guardiola‘s side have lost two of their last three top-flight matches at the King Power Stadium, though they also knocked the Foxes out of the EFL Cup there in 2017 and 2018 (both matches went to penalty shoot-outs).

Leicester City

Leicester have won one of their previous five league games, and just three of the last 10.

This will be Brendan Rodgers’ 300th top-flight match as a manager, including 103 with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

Rodgers has never lost a Premier League home game against Manchester City (W3, D1), but he is winless in all four of his previous matches against sides managed by Pep Guardiola (D2, L2).

Jamie Vardy has scored five goals in his last seven league appearances against Manchester City.

Manchester City

The reigning champions have lost four of their 13 away league games this season, equalling their combined tally from the previous two seasons.

Pep Guardiola‘s side could fail to score in consecutive away league matches for the first time since January 2017.

Kevin de Bruyne has 16 Premier League assists this season, four short of the record set by Arsenal’s Thierry Henry in 2002-03.

Gabriel Jesus has scored in all three of his Premier League starts against Leicester, including two match-winning goals.
