Riyad Mahrez was left delighted after his brace helped City to a 4-0 FA Cup third round victory over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.

The Man of the Match got the ball rolling with a superb free-kick into the top right corner, before Julian Alvarez made it two from the penalty spot.

Phil Foden added a fantastic third before the interval, before Mahrez wrapped up the victory, rifling a late spot-kick into the roof of the net.

The Algerian was proud of his free-kick goal and pleased with the overall contribution of everyone in the team.

“To have played the way we played and to score four goals and keep a clean sheet, it was a good day for us,” he reflected.

“It was good to be fair [free kick]. I think someone touched it a little bit so it made it faster. It was good to start with. After that we played very good.

“I was going to take the first one [penalty], but Julian [Alvarez] asked me, so of course I said yes.

“He’s a striker, he needs goals, it’s good for him. The second one I wanted to take. Everyone was involved today so it’s good.”

The victory takes us into the fourth round of the FA Cup, where we will face either Oxford United or Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium, with the pair set to face off tomorrow evening.

Mahrez believes that City’s mentality has always been to do well in every competition that we participate in, and that is not changing this term.

“We always, every season, try to be involved in every competition.

“We have to keep going, because we deserve it and the way we play, we have to do it that way.”
