Manchester City and Erling Haaland are in contention for prizes at the 2024 Laureus World Sports Awards.

The Club has been nominated for the World Team of the Year award and the prolific striker is among the nominees for World Sportsman of the Year.

First held in 2000, the prestigious annual ceremony recognises the greatest sporting feats from the past calendar year and also reflects the work of Laureus Sport for Good.

There are a total of seven categories (Sportswoman, Sportsman, Team, Breakthrough, Comeback, Action, and Sport For Good) which are created from more than 1000 sports media from over 70 countries.

The shortlist for World Athlete of the Year with a Disability is provided by the International Paralympic Committee.

City’s nomination for World Team of the Year follows our historic and record-breaking 2022/23 campaign which saw Pep Guardiola’s side claim the Treble.

Under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola, the Blues won our third straight Premier League title, before triumphing in the FA Cup and lifting our maiden Champions League.

Since then, we’ve also claimed the Big Five by winning the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Speaking on the nomination, Guardiola said: “We are really proud for our club to have been nominated for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award.

“Of course we are nominated because we won so much last season and the credit must go to all our players, all our staff who worked so hard throughout the season to compete in England and across Europe.

“It is an honour to be included in such an illustrious list of teams who also achieved success at the elite level of sport last year.”

The Club are in contention for the prize alongside the European Ryder Cup team, Germany Men’s Basketball team, Oracle Red Bull Racing, Springboks and Spain Women’s Football team.

Our inclusion on the shortlist follows City being named Men’s Club of the Year at the 2023 Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Alongside the Blues’ nomination is Haaland who enjoyed a sensational maiden season at the Etihad Stadium in 2022/23.

By the term’s end, the Norwegian scored a remarkable 52 goals in 53 appearances which helped break Tommy Johnson’s record for the most goals scored by a City player across a single campaign.

What’s more, his 36 strikes in the Premier League also surpassed Andy Cole and Alan Shearer’s previously unmatched tallies of 34.

Those exploits saw him named PFA Player of the Year and UEFA Men’s Player of the Year for 2022/23 and he’s among Novak Djokovic, Mondo Duplantis, Noah Lyles, Lionel Messi and Max Verstappen for World Sportsman of the Year.

“Last year was a very special year for me and the whole team,” Haaland declared.

“I couldn’t have scored the number of goals I did without my incredible teammates, the coaches and staff at the Club, without them the success would not be possible.

“I am really proud to be nominated for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award alongside so many other incredible athletes.”

The 25th Laureus World Sports Awards will take place in Madrid on Monday 22 April.
