All previous winners of the League Cup will wear a badge that marks the total number of times they’ve lifted the trophy in their history.
Starting against Huddersfield on Wednesday evening, it means City’s kits will include a special ‘eight’ sleeve badge when competing in the competition.
Only Liverpool (10) have won the League Cup on more occasions than the Blues, with our first success coming in 1970 with a 2-1 extra time win over West Bromwich Albion.
HUDDERSFIELD v CITY: MATCH PREVIEW
Another 2-1 win, this time with an early Peter Barnes and iconic Dennis Tueart bicycle kick, secured our next triumph in 1976, this time over Newcastle United.
We’d have to wait 38 years for our next success in the competition when Manuel Pellegrini’s City beat Sunderland 2-1 in 2014, but that victory sparked a quite remarkable period of dominance.
A penalty shootout win over Liverpool would follow in 2016, before Pep Guardiola secured his first trophy as City manager in 2018 with a League Cup final win over Arsenal.
GUARDIOLA GIVES HAALAND UPDATE
That was the first of four successive League Cup triumphs, with Guardiola the only manager in the competition’s history to reach that incredible sequence of victories.
Our most recent success came in 2021 thanks to a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, having beaten Aston Villa and Chelsea in the previous two finals.
And our latest pursuit of another League Cup success begins on Wednesday, as we look to add another number to our sleeve badge come the end of the season.
