After taking the lead through a fortuitous own goal, further strikes from Mateo Kovacic, Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Josko Gvardiol secured three precious points.
And there were a swathe of stats and talking points to arise from the Etihad Stadium after full-time.
UNBEATEN STREAK
By avoiding defeat to Rob Edwards’ side, Pep Guardiola’s team extended our run without loss at home in all competitions to 41 successive matches.
The last time we lost at the Etihad was narrowly to Brentford, 2-1, on 12 November 2022 in the Premier League.
Since then, we’ve scored 120 goals across the following 41 straight undefeated matches - an average of 2.92 per game.
JOSKGOAL
Josko Gvardiol’s curling finish in second-half stoppage time represented his second goal in as many games.
The Croatia international netted his first for the Club in our enthralling 3-3 draw with Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final first leg tie four days before our Luton assignment .
He then continued his fine form in sky blue by scoring our fifth against the Hatters from the edge of the area on the cusp of full-time.
It represented the 11th goal of a career which has seen him finely operate for Dinamo Zagreb, RB Leipzig, City and Croatia.
Across the 90 minutes, the 22-year-old attempted the fourth most shots by a City player with four – only behind Doku (six) and Kevin De Bruyne and Mateo Kovacic who both registered five strikes on goal.
FLYING START
Daiki Hashioka’s unfortunate own goal clocked in at one minute and six seconds – representing our fastest Premier League goal of the season.
The hosts made the perfect start when Doku recycled the ball towards Haaland whose acrobatic attempt appeared to strike the face of Luton’s defender which sent it flying into the net.
Across the quickest goals in the division so far this term, it ranks as the seventh fastest with Burnley’s Jay Rodriguez’s goal against Sheffield United after 15 seconds leading the chart.
FIVE OF THE BEST
City netting five goals at the Etihad Stadium was the 10th time a home team has scored that amount or more in the Premier League in 2023/24.
The first side to do so was Newcastle in their 5-1 win over Aston Villa on the opening day of the term.
Since then, Guardiola’s team has done so on three occasions – including our win over Luton – which is more than any other side.
What’s more, we’re only one of two teams to score six goals in a single league match at home this term following our 6-1 win over Bournemouth in November 2023.
PASS MASTERS
In order to carve open a battling Luton defence, City stuck to our principles of patiently building up play with intricate but effective passes.
Of the 763 passes attempted, 704 of them found a teammate – recording a completion percentage of 92.3%.
Rico Lewis boasted the best individual success rate of 97.7% with our starlet competing 84 of his 86 attempted passes.
Closely behind the versatile defender was Ruben Dias (96.5%) and Doku with 96.4%.
