Riyad Mahrez said City’s dominant 5-0 triumph over Newcastle was proof positive of the powerful armoury at Pep Guardiola’s disposal.

City bounced back in emphatic style from last Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Southampton with the goals shared out between Gabriel Jesus, Mahrez himself, a Federico Fernandez own goal, David Silva and substitute Raheem Sterling.

It could have been more with Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne also close to finding the target.

City had made five changes from the side that lost last weekend and for Mahrez another commanding performance on home soil, hard on the heels of last weeks’ 4-0 rout of Liverpool, merely emphasised the quality running throughout the squad.

“That’s our team – (we know) that everyone can score - everyone has the quality to score,” Mahrez declared.

“For me I want to try to help the team and score the most goals that I can.

“It’s not easy but we made it easy by scoring early in the game. And after we had more control and could try to score more goals.

“I think we played good (at Southampton) we missed a lot of chances today we scored - that’s the difference.”

With an FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal coming up – and a key Champions League last 16 decider against Real Madrid on the horizon too there is a lot to play for.

And Mahrez said the onus was on the side to maintain the highest standards.

“We need to keep it up and to keep working and helping the team to improve so we arrive in the best form in the important games for us,” the Algerian added.
