1946: Ex-City skipper Sam Cowan replaced Wilf Wild as manager as his former boss moved into a purely administrative post.

Cowan, who represented City in three FA Cup Finals during his playing days, led City into a 19-match unbeaten run and won the Second Division Championship during his first season in charge.

While the board were keen for their manager to move back up North, Cowan had no intention of moving back to Manchester and instead resigned from his post.

A superb 2-0 win extended second-placed City’s own unbeaten record, moving us within three points of the Gunners.

Stanway poked home from Demi Stokes‘ left-wing cross early on, before adding a sublime second after half-time.

The England forward latched on to Keira Walsh‘s ball, beat two defenders and found the bottom corner to clinch the three points and throw the title race wide open.
