Looking back at events on this day - good or bad - in our history....

May 2

1992: City round off a fine campaign under Peter Reid with a thumping 5-2 victory away at Oldham on the final day of what was to be the last Division One campaign.

David White leads the way at Boundary Park with a hat-trick while Mike Sheron and Adie Mike also get on the scoresheet.

It means City finish fifth after the final match in the top flight before the reorganisation of English football – and the advent of the Premier League.

CITYZENS AT HOME

1996: Former City chairman Peter Swales passes away after suffering a heart-attack aged 63. Swales had chaired the Blues from 1973 until 1993 when he was replaced by former City legend Francis Lee.

Peter was at the Maine Road helm when we won the 1976 League Cup final.

2009: City coasted to our first home Premier League win over Blackburn since 1993, securing a 3-1 win thanks to three first-half goals.

Defensive errors, both following Elano corners, allowed Felipe Caicedo and Robinho to score.

Then Elano blasted home a penalty following a handball from Gael Givet.

CITY+ - Free to Cityzens until football resumes

The Etihad result also boosted our bid for a Europa League spot.

Birthdays

02/05/1945 - Tony Coleman: Somewhat of a maverick, the Liverpool-born winger spent two years at City during the golden late 60s era under Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison but made a big impact in that comparatively short time.

He was a key part of the side that won the 1968 league title and the FA Cup the following year but left in 1970 for Sheffield Wednesday.

However, TC didn’t last that long at Hillsborough and his subsequent career included spells with Cape Town City, Blackpool, Southport, Stockport County and Macclesfield Town.

02/05/67 - David Rocastle: A two-time title winner with Arsenal, the England midfielder arrived at Maine Road via a short stay with Leeds United when David White moved to Elland Road in December 1993.

He was an instant hit with the City fans and his class shone through immediately but Rocky only played 23 games for the Club before being allowed to join Chelsea a few weeks before the 1994/95 season.

Tragically, Rocky passed away from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of just 33 in 2001.
