Pep Guardiola says his players will recover from the disappointment of our Champions League exit and challenged them to come back stronger next season.

City lost 3-1 against Lyon in Portugal and will return to Manchester having exited the competition at the quarter-final stage for the third-consecutive year.

It was a frustrating night, with the players crestfallen at the full-time whistle.

But Guardiola says it’s time to rest and recover ahead of the new Premier League season – and he wants to see his squad come back determined to improve our Champions League performance.

“Now yes [they are disappointed], but after the break when we start again, we will recover,” he said.

“We will restart again and try to do it again.

“Of course, I am not able with these guys to break the quarter finals. Three years in a row we are out.

“Life is how you stand up again and next season we will try again.”

The new Premier League season starts on September 12, giving the City squad just four weeks to rest and prepare.

And having played 14 matches in eight weeks since the resumption of football, there are bound to be some tired legs in the camp.

But Guardiola was philosophical about the challenge and says he will begin planning for next season after a 48-hour rest.

“Yeah but it is what it is,” he said. “We knew it. The show must go on.

“Now it’s time for the players to take a break.

“We will give them as many days as possible.

“Next season we will be strong and demanding.

“We will now try to sleep, pass 48 hours and then think about next season.”
