Despite City staring brightly and creating a number of chances - including Ilkay Gundogan’s effort which saw the the ball crash against the post - it was the visitors who broke the deadlock.

After the Pilgrims had defended valiantly, they sprang forward and won a corner before Maksym Talovyerov rose highest at the set play and powered a header into the back of the net.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side equalised soon after through Nico O’Reilly who met a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick to flick the ball beyond Conor Hazard.

The second half continued in a similar fashion with City having lots of the ball and fashioning opportunities, but Plymouth continued to frustrate and thwart our attacking play.

Just when the thought of extra-time began to creep into the minds of those on the field, in the Etihad and watching from home, O’Reilly grabbed his brace with another fine header which he directed into the bottom corner.

De Bruyne then all-but sealed the success late on when he met Erling Haaland’s ball across the face of goal and tucked into an empty net.

It means we’ve secured passage into the quarter-final of the historic competition as we eye an eighth FA Cup triumph.
