City recorded a famous victory at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night, beating Real Madrid 2-1 courtesy of goals from Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne.

It was the first time an English side had won at the Bernabeu for 11 years and the first time in our history we have beaten Los Blancos.

But it was perhaps the manner of the performance that was most impressive. City were in total control for large periods and will feel disappointed not to have scored more goals.

It was a night of statistical significance, too, with a plethora of milestones and achievements racked up.

Here’s a rundown of the best.

Pep Guardiola has now overseen 10 victories against Real Madrid, which is more than any other manager this century.

It was his 28th knock-out phase win – more than any other manager. He has now surpassed Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Alex Ferguson.

And he is only the second manager to win two Champions League away games against Real Madrid, after Ottmar Hitzfeld. He is the first to do so with two different clubs.

City’s dominance in the game can be summed up by the top-line stats. We had eight shots on target to Real Madrid’s three, as well as five off target to the home side’s four.

Indeed, City had as many shots on target away at Real Madrid (eight) as all three other English clubs managed - combined - in the UCL last-16 first-leg ties.

We are only the second side to beat Real Madrid away in Champions League despite conceding first. AC Milan in October 2009 are the only other club to manage the feat.

De Bruyne’s winner from the penalty spot was his 50th for City and his assists for the opening goal was the 20th time this season he has laid on a goal for a teammate. This was the first time he has both scored and assisted in a Champions League match.

He was also deservedly named man of the match after another inspiring display.

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez, speaking in his capacity as a UEFA technical observer, said: “He was at the centre of every attacking threat for City. His clever positioning on the ball allowed City to create numerical advantages all over the pitch. He also displayed outstanding decisions on the ball and scored from the penalty spot.”
