Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne are both in contention to return for Manchester City’s Carabao Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Injury has prevented the Argentine striker from being involved in City’s previous four games, whilst De Bruyne missed the midweek win over Aston Villa after he picked up a knock on his right foot and ankle in the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea.

Pep Guardiola confirmed both players have trained ahead of the game, but suggested he will wait until after the final session on Saturday to make a decision on whether City’s record goalscorer will have the chance to enjoy a Wembley swansong.

“Both trained today,” said the City boss at Friday’s pre-match press conference.

On Aguero, he added: “Today was his first training session in two weeks.  Tomorrow is the last session and we will then decide.”

City have enjoyed something of a love affair with League Cup in recent seasons and are bidding to become only the second team in history behind Liverpool to win the competition in four consecutive years.

With this year’s final delayed to allow fans to attend following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, City have just two days to recover for a crucial Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

But whilst Guardiola concedes success in Europe and the Premier League takes priority, he says his side are determined to extend their superb winning run in the Carabao Cup.

“We cannot deny the Champions League is close and the Premier League is not over and they are more important, but we want to win this competition,” he added.

“Tottenham’s commitment will be incredible and the quality of their players is extraordinary. It is a final and once you are there, every player wants to win it. And we are no exception.

“We deserve to be here. We had a tough competition, especially in the semi-final. We were there and every team wants to win finals.

“We will travel to London to play a good game and win the title.”
