Joao Cancelo has been voted the 2021/22 Player of the Season by the Swedish branch of Manchester City’s Official Supporters’ Club.

The City defender is the latest recipient of the Blue Horse award, which has been presented annually for the past 12 seasons.

No outfield player saw more minutes in the Premier League than Cancelo as we defended our title with his flexibility allowing Pep Guardiola to play him at full-back on either flank.

Among his standout moments were his stunning long-range strike in the 4-0 victory over Newcastle and his brilliant ‘Trivela’ assist for Raheem Sterling’s opener against Everton.

Cancelo follows on from Phil Foden who won the award last season and each Blue Horse is designed and handmade yearly by Rättvik-based artist Jonny Gudmunds.

“The story about the horse is that it’s an old Swedish national symbol called Dalecarlian horse,” Andreas Fahlgren, chair of the Swedish branch explains.

“The original colour is red, not acceptable for obvious reasons, so we made an a more beautiful version to hand out.

“Many of our members are telling us that they feel proud to participate in voting for the best player of the year as it makes them feel closer to the club, so this has become an very important tradition for us.

“We also have a yearly competition where members are tipping the results for the majority of City’s games and the winner of that competition wins a signed shirt from the winner of ‘The Blue Horse’.”

Congratulations to Joao on his award.
