Since the start of the 2017/18 season, the two clubs at opposite ends of the East Lancs Road have been the major forces in English football, rewriting the history books with the manner of our respective successes.
In 2018/19, City pipped Liverpool at the post as we edged one of the most keenly contested title races in recent memory, but either side of that fierce battle each team enjoyed a season of remarkable dominance.
Pep Guardiola’s 2017/18 Centurions and Jurgen Klopp’s winners of 2019/20 rank amongst the greatest champions this country has seen.
Here, we look at how they compare…
Points
Liverpool broke several records en route to lifting last season’s Premier League, but one that City preserved was our record 100-point tally from 2017/18. The Reds finished on 99-points in their title-winning campaign.
Wins
The two teams share the Premier League record for most wins in a single season, each having recorded 32 victories. It is a tally City have reached on two occasions, as we also won 32 games in 2018/19.
Goals scored
It is advantage City in the goal scoring department.
Guardiola’s side scored 106 times in the Centurions campaign and even managed to outscore our Merseyside rivals last season. We hit the back of the net on 102 occasions, whilst Liverpool scored 85 times.
Goals against
We conceded just 27 times in 2017/18 and that gives us a slight edge over Liverpool. The Reds were excellent in defence last season, but conceded six more goals (33).
The Centurions record at both ends of the pitch means we finished with a +79 goal difference, the best in Premier League history. Liverpool’s championship winning team ended with +52.
Home wins
It is another shared Premier League record.
City in 2017/18 and Liverpool last season both managed 18 home victories, a milestone also achieved by Chelsea and Manchester United.
Away wins
City won 50-points way from home in 2017/18 to set a Premier League record.
We won 16 times on the road, which is two better than Liverpool managed last season, when they picked up 44-points on their travels.
when the title was won
Liverpool sealed the championship with seven matches to spare, which is two games earlier than City managed in 2017/18.
Previously, we had shared the record with Manchester United, who also won with five games remaining in 2000/01.
