City’s Julian Alvarez opened the scoring for Argentina in their 5-0 friendly victory over the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday.

Our striker started his country’s final match before the 2022 World Cup in-between Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria.

And it was the Argentina captain who provided the assist for our attacker when he broke clear of the UAE defence and squared the ball to Alvarez who applied the finish.

The 22-year-old’s strike seemed to have opened the flood gates as Lionel Scaloni’s side raced into a 4-0 lead before half-time.

Di Maria bagged an outstanding brace in the space of 10 first half minutes when he volleyed low into the net, before rounding Khalid Eisa and tapping home his second.

Messi then got in on the act before the interval when he cut past the defence, danced into the box and fired home with his right foot.

Scaloni made a number of changes at the break, but Alvarez remained on the field until the 51st minute when he was replaced by Enzo Fernandes.

And it was one of his substitutes who scored the fifth.

Joaquin Correa latched onto Rodrigo De Paul’s inch-perfect pass to trickle the ball past Eisa from inside the box.

Across the final 30 minutes, Argentina were happy to sit on their lead and see out victory - in was the perfect preparation for a side many are backing for a strong campaign in Qatar.
