Pep Guardiola says he has huge respect for Japanese football as City prepare to kick off our Asia Tour against fellow CFG side Yokohama F. Marinos on Sunday.

The game, which will be shown live on CITY+ and Recast, will be played at the brand new National Stadium in Tokyo in front of a likely 60,000+ crowd, with kick off at 19:00 local time / 11:00 am UK.

It’s a repeat of the preseason match from four years ago, which saw City run out 3-1 winners against a talented and high-octane Yokohama team managed by new Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou.

It’s a game Guardiola remembers well, and he says Japanese football more widely is in great health.

“Yesterday I watched Yokohama and I like a lot what I see,” he said.

“Maybe because we are in the same football group - the City Football Group - they are doing a very good job.

“Tomorrow will be so difficult for us because they are so aggressive. They are dynamic in their process, the build-up, everything they do. I like it. I say wow.

“I have a big respect for what this country has done for many years, not just now.

“I would say the impact of [Brighton winger Kaoru] Mitoma on the Premier League has been incredible. He is in the right place with the right manager and his last season was extraordinary.

“And look at what Japan have done in the World Cup in a tough, tough group.”

Meanwhile, Guardiola also discussed the transfer widow, which remains open until Friday 1 September.

City have already signed Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea, with Ilkay Gundogan leaving after seven stellar years to join Barcelona.

Kyle Walker has been the subject of intense speculation regarding a move away, as has Joao Cancelo, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Bayern Munich.

But Guardiola says no decisions have been made regarding their futures.

HOW TO FOLLOW CITY’S 2023 ASIA TOUR

“I think many things will happen,” he said.

“I cannot answer because I don’t know. I want the best for my players and of course the club is part of me as well.

“I spoke with Kyle and everything is right - we will see what happens. I cannot tell you anything because he is still thinking about that.

“[Joao] is here. Joao has been so important for us in the past. After the loan at Bayern he is back here and is part of the group. Like I said to your colleagues, we will see what happens.”
