Akanji joins the Club from Borussia Dortmund, where he made 158 appearances during a four-and-a-half-year spell in Germany.

During that time, he helped his former employers to German Super Cup glory in 2019, as well as the German Cup title in 2020/21.

Before then, the 27-year-old had been equally successful in his native Switzerland, helping FC Basel to successive domestic titles and one Swiss Cup in his first two seasons at the club, despite suffering a cruciate ligament injury in 2015.

The defender has made 41 appearances for his nation, representing them at the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020, when he was a part of the team to beat World champions France en route to the quarter-finals.
