Manuel Akanji will wear the No.25 shirt at Manchester City.

The Swiss international joins the Club from German side Borussia Dortmund, penning a five-year deal until the summer of 2027.

A combative 6 ft 2in defender, the 27-year-old has made 41 appearances for his nation since his debut in 2017, helping them to a quarter-final finish at last year’s European Championships.

But having worn the No.16 shirt at Dortmund, Akanji has opted to switch to No.25 ahead of his move to the Etihad Stadium.

It is a number hugely significant to our recent success, having been vacated by Club legend and former captain Fernandinho at the end of his nine-year stay this summer.

The Brazilian claimed five Premier League titles and a further eight major trophies during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

Before the midfielder joined in 2013, the No.25’s previous owner had been longstanding goalkeeper Joe Hart, who had donned the shirt during our inaugural Premier League title-winning campaign of 2011/12.

Other notable names to wear the number in recent years include Wayne Bridge and Emmanuel Adebayor, doing so for a season apiece in 2008/09 and 2009/10 respectively.
