Matheus Nunes says he was delighted to make his City debut in our entertaining 3-1 win against West Ham on Saturday.

The Portugal international was Pep Guardiola’s fourth and final summer signing following the arrivals of Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku – joining from Wolves on deadline day.

Having remained an unused substitute in our 5-1 win over Fulham before the international break, the 25-year-old made his sky blue bow at the London Stadium where goals from Doku, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland maintained our 100% start to the Premier League season.

Following James Ward-Prowse’s opener, we impressively came from behind to claim all three points in the capital, with Nunes entering play for the final 23 minutes to help seal the success.

And the combative midfielder couldn’t contain his pride after representing the Club for the first time.

“It was very good - I was waiting for that [my debut] since I arrived,” he explained.

“I’m happy to make my debut and to help the team get the win. I’m very happy to be here - it’s a very united team and very strong with a lot of quality players.

“I want to play always. I want to help the team, and, in the end, we got the result that we wanted. I’m happy.

“He [Guardiola] said first to ‘keep going’ because we were playing well and creating chances. We didn’t score but he said, ‘we were playing good and carry on’ and that’s what we did.”

Nunes is no stranger to the rigours of English football after making 41 appearances in all competitions for Wolves.

But switching clubs and cities could still represent a daunting task to any player as they look to adapt to their new surroundings.

Thanks to his new team-mate’s open arms, though, he’s quickly settled into life in Manchester.

As a result, the Portuguese is eager to continue his personal development at the Etihad Stadium and help Guardiola’s side lift more silverware.

He added: “I just enjoy being part of it. I try to do my best and that’s what my mentality is always like.

“Hopefully I can play my best every week and help the team. It doesn’t matter where I play, I just want to give my energy for the team and to help the team win every game.

“It’s been very good - everybody has been very friendly to me and helping me settle in as quick as I can. It’s only going to get better.

“We just have to work the same way as always and keep going and keep building the confidence.”
