Matheus Nunes says he’s enjoying his run at right-back in Pep Guardiola’s City side.

The Portuguese international arrived at City in the summer of 2023 having previously starred throughout his career in midfield.

However, he’s been used predominantly as a right-sided full-back in 2025 and has already played 20 times for City across all competitions.

He’s contributed effectively going forward, supplying four assists and scoring against Burnley, while Guardiola has regularly praised his improvement in the defensive side of the game.

Speaking on Friday ahead of this weekend’s visit of West Ham, Nunes outlined the nuance between his natural position and where he’s currently starring.

“I enjoy it. In a football perspective, it’s so different to playing in midfield,” he began.

“Nowadays, I think it’s one of the hardest positions to play because you face the best players in every team as a full-back.

“The defensive work I need to do now is so much different compared to the work I needed to do as a midfielder. That’s something I really enjoy - the difference.

“I have to be focused all the time, I have to be looking at the line, cover support to the wing and also cover the centre-backs.

“As a full-back here, I can play wide, in the pocket, in centre-back or as a holding midfielder - this variety is something I enjoy and appreciate.

“It also makes me grow even more. Things can change during the game and there’s a lot of things that are different compared to playing as a midfielder. I enjoy it.”

Midway through his third season at the Etihad Stadium, Nunes feels he’s developed on and off the pitch as a City player.

And now a crucial part of Guardiola’s plans, he’s well aware of the need to maintain concentration in every game.

“Each year you gain new experiences, have more knowledge and learn more. Every year is better,” he said.

“Since I came to City, I’ve grown a lot. I’m older and I’m more mature as a person.

“You learn every season, and you become stronger and better.”

“We’ve been playing very well and having good results.

“Hopefully we can carry on like this. We have to continue like we are.

“Football can change very quickly, and we have to continue the way we have been doing.”
