Matchday Live guest and former City player Michael Brown says Cole Palmer’s ability is clear for all to see following our Super Cup win over Sevilla on Wednesday evening.

City competed in the European showpiece for the first time in our history and lifted the trophy after beating the Spanish outfit 5-4 on penalties.

And it was Palmer’s stellar performance – in which he scored our equalising goal – that aided in City winning our first silverware since the Treble success of 2022/23.

After the game, Brown dissected Palmer’s performance and was full of praise for the 21-year-old on Matchday Live.

“He obviously tried to come in on that left hand side and occasionally chopping in, making forward runs on to the back post,” began Brown.

“I think that was the difference in the second half. You can see the forward runs were better, the movement was much better into the second half and really just that advantage really put the pressure on.”

Like Brown, Palmer made the transition from City’s Academy to first-team football and is continuing to develop positively in the opening games of the 2023/24 campaign.

He scored a stunning goal in our Community Shield defeat to Arsenal earlier this month, showing his eye for goal and ability to persevere in difficult games, just like our win over Sevilla.

“He did impress. And later on in the second half he actually turned, he pushed the line, he went through some legs and he was into the box – just got caught up – but that type of run and that type of service and getting into those positions, having the confidence to go through people, will get better,” said Brown.

“Obviously a couple of goals is going to help his confidence. We know the ability is there, he’s better than any young player, we’ve seen it with Phil Foden and we see Cole Palmer, he attracted everyone’s attention straight away for how good he is on the ball.

“Hopefully he can make that position – you don’t just sort of get it your own – but you can make it that you’re going to be a regular much more than last season.”
