Anthony Gordon cancelled out a Josko Gvardiol opener as City claimed a point after a 1-1 Premier League draw against Newcastle United in a scintillating match at St James’ Park.

Newcastle came flying out of the traps in what was a fiery start, pressing City early on.

Pep Guardiola’s men grew into the game and after sustained pressure, Josko Gvardiol stroked in his first goal of the campaign to end a neat move.

It was wonderful work from Jack Grealish on the left who moved inside and slid the ball into Gvardiol, who looked like he would shoot straight away, but instead cut in and rolled the ball into the bottom right corner past Nick Pope to give City the advantage.

Before the end of the half, City nearly doubled the lead twice, as Bernardo’s deflected cross was snatched off Erling Haaland‘s toe by Kieran Trippier, before Ilkay Gundogan’s chipped shot, after a great interception on the edge of the box, was collected by the Newcastle keeper.

Newcastle levelled after the break as Anthony Gordon earned a foul in the box to win a penalty.

The Newcastle winger stepped up and sent City keeper Ederson the wrong way, rolling the ball into the left corner of the goal and St James’ Park was buoyant once more.

City pushed for a winner, with Phil Foden and Bernardo both having strong efforts on goal, but both sides had to share the points.
