Pep Guardiola has helped elevate Bernardo Silva’s game to new heights, according to Portuguese compatriot Nuno Gomes.

Since moving to City from Monaco three years ago, Bernardo has emerged as one of European football’s most accomplished midfielders and has played a huge role in the Club’s success in that period.

Working under City boss Guardiola, the 25-year-old has also shown his flexibility, being able to operate either through right side of midfield, out wide on the flanks or even as a false number nine to equally impressive effect.

With the Premier League campaign having resumed following a three-month hiatus due to the COVID-9 pandemic, and City next in action on Monday at home to Burnley, Bernardo is set to be a key figure once more over the next few months.

And, for his part, former Portugal and Benfica icon Gomes believes the impact of Guardiola has only helped galvanise Bernardo’s abundant natural talent.

Bernardo is, for me at the moment, one of the best players that we have in Portugal,” declared Gomes.

“With Pep he’s improved a lot. I believe that Guardiola has said a lot of times that he is a massive fan of Bernardo Silva.

“And I believe Bernardo Silva, knowing that he has the trust and the confidence of the coach, he goes onto the field and he plays naturally, because he has a talent that is natural.”

An integral part of the City side that has won eight of the past nine domestic trophies on honour, allied to his natural ability, Bernardo has also become one of the English game’s most selfless players thanks to his adaptability to help the needs of the team.

And Gomes says that working under Guardiola, has also seen Bernardo add another quality to his list of attributes.

Bernardo has improved also in terms of defending,” Gomes continued.

“The way that he pushes the opponent, [as well as] the way he can compromise [opposition] defensive situations, because with the ball he is one of the best.

“I believe with Pep Guardiola, he has already improved a lot in his style of play, and I’m a big fan of Bernardo Silva.”
