It was the night when City could confirm their qualification for next season’s Champions’ League with a victory over Spurs. The game was tense from the off and the trembling nerves could be felt all round the stadium. Like 12 months previously it would take an intervention from Peter Crouch to settle the match. Luckily, on this occasion, the same player diverted the ball into his own goal to give City the much-needed victory and a place at Europe’s top table.

Sergio Aguero scores a hat-trick as City thrash QPR 6-0 at the Etihad. Aleks Kolarov, James Milner and David Silva are also on target on a day when Shaun Wright-Phillips comes on as a sub for the Hoops to a rapturous ovation from the City fans who know it will be the final time the former crowd favourite plays in England before his move to the MLS. The win confirms City’s Champions League qualification while QPR are relegated.

Mel Machin is appointed as manager of City, taking over from Billy McNeill who quit the Blues for Aston Villa. Machin was a quietly spoken, but highly respected coach who had established a good reputation at Carrow Road. Though his arrival didn’t particularly excite the City faithful, they were prepared to give a chance.

City hold FAWSL leaders Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at the Academy Stadium. Eniola Aluko gives the visitors the lead but Toni Duggan levels before the break and only a fine late save by Hedvig Lindahl denies City’s Natasha Flint a late winner.
