Looking back on events, games and moments on this day in our history...

17 December

2005

Stuart Pearce’s City cruised to a 4-1 Premier League win over a beleaguered Birmingham City.

City got off to a flying start when David Sommeil headed home from Joey Barton’s corner after just 42 seconds and the home side doubled the lead inside 15 minutes with Barton converting a penalty after Birmingham goalkeeper Nico Vaesen brought down Darius Vassell.

Denied the services of top scorer Andrew Cole, Antoine Sibiersk proved a more than able deputy and his ariel prowess caused the visitors countless problems.

He all but confirmed the victory before the break, nodding in a Barton free-kick to make it 3-0 and the Frenchman’s knockdown allowed substitute Bradley Wright-Phillips to put the game beyond doubt with his first touch of the ball 22 minutes from time.

Jiri Jaroski netted a consolation for Birmingham, who had Vaesen dismissed for a second bookable offence in the closing stages.

2017

City reached the semi-finals of the Continental Cup with a 2-0 victory away at Bristol City Women.

Nick Cushing’s side controlled the game at Oaklands Park Stadium, but it took us an hour to break the deadlock when Abbie McManus’ superb cross was nodded in by Nikita Parris at the far post.

From there it was one-way traffic, and the home side were indebted to goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley, who twice denied Claire Emslie.

Jennifer Beattie sealed the win with three minutes remaining, heading home an Izzy Christiansen corner to send City through to the last four of the competition.
