Looking back at events, signings and games from City’s history that occurred on this day…

2 April

1923

With six games of the 1923/24 season remaining, City beat Sunderland 1-0 to record what proved to be our final victory at Hyde Road.

Horace Barnes got the all-important goal in front of 32,000 fans, though we were unable to repeat the trick in our final two fixtures at the stadium, as we drew 1-1 and 0-0 with Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United respectively.

City moved to Maine Road in time for the 1923/24 campaign, bringing an end to our 36-year stay (under various names) at Hyde Road, which had been our home since 1887.

Birthdays

Former midfield maestro Eyal Berkovic is 48 today.

The Israeli playmaker joined Kevin Keegan’s City in July 2001 and went on to score nine goals in 67 appearances.

A fan favourite, Berkovic formed an almost telepathic partnership with Ali Benarbia and was instrumental in our 2001/02 campaign, when we won promotion back to the Premier League as Division One champions.
