City confirm Derby County’s relegation from the top flight with a 2-1 victory, but the match remains memorable for other reasons. City, leading through Niall Quinn’s volley, are reduced to ten men when goalkeeper Tony Coton gives away a penalty and is given his marching orders. Without a substitute goalie to bring on, City are forced to call upon Quinn to don the gloves and stand between the sticks. Remarkably Quinn’s first act is to save Dean Saunders’ penalty with a low-dive, which was described by the commentator as reminiscent of Gordon Banks’ famous save from a Pelé header in the World Cup! 10-man City increase the lead through David White before Mick Harford pulls a late goal back. City hold on for the win and Quinn was able to claim the rare honour of scoring and saving a penalty in the same match.

Phil Foden heads the only goal of the game as City secure three crucial points against Spurs at the Etihad. Foden’s goal comes after just five minutes and City hold out for the remaining time to claim a 1-0 victory and remain on course for back-to-back Premier League titles. The victory is all the more impressive having gone out of the Champions League against Spurs just days earlier.
