Looking back at events, signings and games from City’s history that occurred on this day…

23 MARCH

1968

City’s title hopes suffered a blow with a 2-0 defeat to Don Revie’s Leeds United.

A full-house at Elland Road roared the Lilywhites to victory to keep Leeds top while City slip behind Manchester United into third spot.

However, by May the picture would look very different, with City finishing as champions, two points ahead of United.

1986

Billy McNeill’s City travelled to Wembley to face Chelsea in the inaugural Full Members’ Cup final at Wembley – just 24 hours after drawing 2-2 with Manchester United at Old Trafford .

With English clubs banned from European competition, the Full Members’ Cup hoped to become the third major cup competition in England, but it was always destined to fail due to lack of prestige.

Considered of little importance by most of the football world, both City and Chelsea progressed through the rounds in front of sparse crowds, until they met at Wembley.

Despite the general apathy surrounding the competition, some 68,000 fans turned out on the day and enjoyed a quite spectacular feast of attacking football that ebbed and flowed in the dramatic traditions befitting both clubs.

City went ahead through Mark Lillis but Chelsea roared back to lead 5–1 and were home and dry as the game ticked towards 90 minutes.

Incredibly, City pulled three goals back in the few minutes remaining through Mark Lillis, Steve Kinsey and an own goal and almost scrambled an equaliser, ultimately losing 5–4.

In preparation for our first season in the FA Women’s Super League, City travel to Durham in a pre-season friendly.

Nick Cushing’s side storm to victory over the North East outfit, courtesy of a Toni Duggan hat-trick, plus goals from Betsy Hassett, Jill Scott, Steph Houghton and Danielle Young.

2016

City kick off the new WSL campaign with a win in dramatic fashion, as captain Houghton nets an injury-time free-kick to clinch a precious three points.

The triumph, in which Izzy Christiansen produces the live Twitter commentary(!), sparks an impressive seven-game winning streak as Cushing’s side start as we mean to go on.

We would lift our first league crown the following October with an unbeaten WSL campaign.

2017

Carli Lloyd bags her first City goal on her Champions League debut, as City edge a 1-0 victory in the quater-final first leg at Fortuna Hjorring.

The two-time FIFA World Player of the Year had joined City on a short-term loan and would play a key role in our Spring Series, Champions League and FA Cup campaigns.

The USA star headed home Jane Ross’ delivery to net a crucial away goal and hand City a strong advantage to bring back to Manchester...
