Looking back at events - good or bad - on this day in our history...

26 April

1926

Albert Alexander relinquishes his position as City manager, having been an influential character at the Club for more than two decades.

In 1904, he was the driver of the horse-drawn carriage that took the Club Directors to London for the FA Cup triumph; then, in the 1920s, he became City’s Vice-Chairman.

After the resignation of manager David Ashworth in November 1925, the Committee members selected a team until a suitable replacement could be found, with Alexander holding a lead role.

During that time, the Club had inflicted a record 6-1 Derby win over Manchester United and reached the 1926 FA Cup Final but were ultimately unsuccessful and relegated.

1969

After a disappointing league campaign, City beat Leicester 1-0 at Wembley Stadium to lift the FA Cup for the fourth time.

Mike Summerbee’s low cross is hammered home by the trusty left-foot of Neil Young in the 24th minute to win the most famous domestic competition in the world and ease the disappointment of a miserable defence of the First Division crown.

2008

City’s final home game of the 2007/08 campaign ends in frustration, as Sven-Göran Eriksson’s men surrender a 2-0 half-time lead to lose 3-2 to relegation-threatened Fulham.

Early goals from Stephen Ireland and Benjani had given the home side a comfortable lead but Roy Hodgson’s side rally in the second half to keep their hopes of Premier League survival alive with three goals in the final 20 minutes.

Danny Murphy levels for the Londoners with 11 minutes to go after Diomansy Kamara had halved the deficit and the Senegal striker pops up in injury time to snatch a pivotal victory for the visitors.

Wins over fellow strugglers Birmingham and Portsmouth ensure the Cottagers would in fact stay up.

2015

Former Evertonian Nikita Parris is on the scoresheet against Liverpool but cannot prevent City from falling to a second successive FA Women’s Super League defeat.

Although the striker had cancelled out Asisat Oshoala’s opener, the hosts secure the win through Line Smorgard’s 57th-minute header at the Select Security Stadium to leapfrog Nick Cushing’s side in the table.

2016

City compete in the Champions League semi-finals for the first time, welcoming Spanish giants Real Madrid to the Etihad Stadium in the first leg.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men preserve a clean sheet to deny the visitors an away goal with Joe Hart producing two excellent late saves, thwarting Casemiro and Pepe, while Jese heads against the bar.

Quarter-final hero Kevin De Bruyne comes closest to netting for the home side but saw his injury time free-kick agonisingly tipped over the crossbar.
