Wednesday 29 April 1970

As torrential rain poured down in Vienna, City took on Polish side Gornik Zabrze in the European Cup Winner’s Cup final at the Prater Stadium, Austria. It was the Blues’ second foray into Europe having been knocked out of the European Cup at the first hurdle the year before. Goals from Neil Young and Francis Lee prove enough to give Joe Mercer’s team a 2-1 win and our first success in European competition.

City record a superb 1-0 Women’s Champions League win away to Lyon - but fall short of pulling the tie around after a 3-1 first leg loss in Manchester. Carli Lloyd scores the only goal of the game to cap a magnificent effort from Nick Cushing’s side.

Goalkeeper and well-known extrovert John Burridge becomes the oldest player to feature in a game in Premier League history when he comes on as a second-half substitute for City, aged 43 years, 4 months and 26 days. Budgie entertains the fans with a trademark hand-stand and does reasonably well during his cameo appearance.

Wednesday 29 April 1925

Around 15,000 fans attend Billy Meredith’s testimonial at Hyde Road where a combined City and United took on a combined Celtic and Rangers XI in a 2-2 draw. The crowd was slightly disappointing considering Meredith’s history with both Manchester clubs.

Wednesday 29 April 1986

City lift the FA Youth Cup after beating Manchester United 2-0 at Maine Road. After a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, the young Blues, featuring such future first-team stars as Andy Hinchcliffe, Ian Brightwell, Steve Redmond, David White, Paul Moulden, Ian Scott and Paul Lake, delight the crowd of 18,164 with goals from Moulden and Boyd enough to secure a 3-1 win. The victory is particularly poignant at a time the senior squad were yo-yoing between the top flight and the second tier.
