Copenhagen was deemed the perfect venue to decide the replayed third round European Cup Winners’ Cup tie between City and old foes Gornik Zabrze and it was hardly surprising only 12,100 turned up to watch the match.

City didn’t dally around in what was a effectively a replay after both teams had won their home legs 2-0 and, determined to defend their title, they brushed aside the Poles with goals from Neil Young, Tommy Booth and Franny Lee securing a 3-1 win.

Chelsea were waiting in the all-English semi but an injury-hit City would lose both legs 1-0.

Emile Mpenza boosts City’s hopes of avoiding the drop when he scores the only goal in a 1-0 away to Newcastle.

The victory puts Stuart Pearce’s side six points clear of third-bottom Charlton Athletic, though with just 23 goals in 30 games, City remain in peril after a dismal, dour and disappointing campaign under the former England defender’s tenure.

Steph Houghton is named UEFA football development ambassador and tasked with spreading the positive impact of women’s football much further afield.

At the time, she said: “I am very honoured to become a UEFA Women’s Football Development Ambassador.

“The women’s game has grown so much over the past few years but there is still so much that can be done to develop it further.

“I hope that I can make a significant contribution and support the game, especially in countries and with UEFA’s member associations that don’t get the same support that we are fortunate to have here in England.”
