1966
The great Colin Bell scores the only goal of the game as City beat Rotherham 1-0 at Millmoor to win promotion at the first attempt under the new management team of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison.
Bell’s goal leaves City four points clear of second placed Huddersfield Town and third placed Coventry, who both had only one game remaining.
Southampton, in fourth, had three games to play so it would be another two games before City were crowned champions of Division Two.
A famous period of success would follow…
1984
City’s hopes of securing promotion to Division One are ended after a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Maine Road.
Pat Nevin and Kerry Dixon get the goals for the visitors, which leave Billy McNeill’s side seven points behind Sheffield Wednesday with two games to play.
The match is the first second tier fixture to televised live to the nation and a reduced crowd of 21,713 reflects this.
2006
City lose 3-1 to Champions League finalists Arsenal in the final home game of the season.
Stuart Pearce’s side go in level at the break after David Sommeil bundled home to cancel out Freddie Ljungberg’s opener, but two late goals from substitute Jose Antonio Reyes win it for the Gunners.
2008
Fernando Torres’ solitary strike is the difference against Liverpool, who consign City to a fourth defeat in six games.
The Spanish striker scores moments after Martin Petrov had hit the post with a free-kick and Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side were unable to respond.
2018
It is announced that Yaya Toure will call time on his legendary City career at the end of the 2017/18 season.
Pep Guardiola reveals the Ivorian midfielder will make his final appearance at the last home game of the season against Brighton and Hove Albion, where the 34-year-old captains the team to a 3-1 victory.
“Yaya came here at the start of the journey,” said Guardiola. “Where we are now is because of what he has done.”
“We cannot forget the period from Roberto Mancini, and especially Manuel Pellegrini, Yaya was the key player.
2019
City win the 2019 FA Women’s Cup at Wembley with a 3-0 win over West Ham.
Second half goals from Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway and Lauren Hemp clinch our second success in the competition at Wembley, registering a 3-0 win in front of a crowd of 43,264.
After a goalless and somewhat cagey opening 45 minutes to the game, a much more end-to-end second half sees City gain control and unleash our firepower.
