Looking back at events - good and bad - that happened on this day in our history...

1974

It was a day of managerial upheaval for City back in 1974.

Ron Saunders was sacked after a run of poor form before he accepted a role to manage Second Division outfit Aston Villa.

City finished 14th during his time in charge, but he guided the club to a League Cup final, which was won by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The previous season, he had led Norwich City to the same final, and had lost to Tottenham Hotspur. As Manchester City manager he won just a third of his games in charge, scoring 38 goals in 29 games.

Later the same day, City’s most successful captain of all time, Tony Book, is appointed as the club’s new manager.

Book is initially employed in a caretaker role until the end of the season.
