Looking back at events - good or bad - that happened on this day in our history...

Wednesday 17 April 2019

In one of the cruellest finishes imaginable, City are denied a last-gasp winner by VAR as Spurs progress to the Champions League semi-final. In a breathless first-half, City get the early goal they need through a Raheem Sterling strike to level the aggregate scores. But two Spurs goals from Son Heung-Min make it 2-1 with just 10 minutes played – before further goals from Bernardo and Sterling make it 3-2 with just 21 minutes played.

City score again just before the hour-mark through Sergio Aguero, but when Fernando Llorente makes it 4-3 after the ball hits his arm and goes in, the referee takes a long VAR recommended check before awarding the goal. The cruel twist comes deep into added time when Sterling looks to have won the game for City, but as the Etihad celebrates, the goal is ruled out for offside by VAR. An incredible, heart-breaking moment for City fans as the Champions League ends in the most dramatic way imaginable.
