1988: Plymouth Argyle returned to the West Country content at the 1-0 deficit from the League Cup second round first leg clash at Maine Road and the Pilgrims must have fancied their chances of turning the tie around.

But on an evening of goals galore at Home Park, City plundered six of the nine goals scored to register a remarkable 6-3 win on the night and 7-3 triumph overall.

Wayne Biggins, Paul Moulden, Nigel Gleghorn (2), Neil McNab and Paul Lake all scored making the midweek trek to the south west well worthwhile for the 1,000 or so travelling Blues.

2016: City reached the last 16 of the Women’s Champions League as a 4-0 victory in Russia sealed a dominant, 6-0 aggregate win over Zvezda 2005.

City had led 2-0 from the first leg after their European debut on Thursday.

Defenders Jennifer Beattie and Lucy Bronze fired in from first-half corners to extend the new English champions’ lead, as they controlled possession.

Beattie headed in her second after the break, before Isobel Christiansen slotted in City’s fourth late on.

The victory extended Nick Cushing’s side run to 19 clean sheets in 24 matches in all competitions so far in 2016.

2017: City joined Chelsea in the last 16 of the Women’s Champions League by easing to a 6-0 aggregate win over Austrian side St Polten.

Already leading 3-0 from the first leg, City wasted a glorious early chance to extend their lead when Jane Ross had a penalty saved by Jasmin Boisits.

Nikita Parris finally bundled City in front, and Jill Scott fired in from 18 yards just before half-time.

Melissa Lawley drove in a late third to underline City’s dominance.
