City boss Pep Guardiola says Nathan Ake is progressing well in his recovery from a hamstring injury but is not expected to be involved in Wednesday’s penultimate Premier League game at Brighton.

The Dutch international defender has missed the last four games after being forced off with a hamstring complaint in our 2-1 win over Leeds earlier this month.

Addressing the media at his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to the Amex Stadium, the City boss said Ake was making positive progress in his recovery.

But he said Ake‘s return to full fitness and possible selection was more like to be around the time of next month’s FA Cup final against Manchester United and Champions League final against Inter.

“He’s getting better. He’s at the latter stage (of his recovery),” Guardiola revealed.

“We have to be careful after a second time being injured. In case we need him for United of Inter.”

Wednesday’s clash will be City’s first game after we were presented with the Premier League trophy at the weekend after sealing the title for a third successive season.

That is then followed by our last league game of the season on Sunday when we visit Brentford.

Looking ahead to the trips, the boss said it was vital for his players to maintain focus and drive ahead of next month’s two huge finals.

“The two teams we have to play in the Premier League, Brighton and Brentford deserve our attention and our credit,” Guardiola stressed.

“We have some niggles. The finals are the main target. But we have to start completely focus in these two games.

“They are two really good teams and we have to do it.

“I prefer to be already champion. They had the party after the game against Chelsea. I don’t know how they feel tomorrow. We will run a lot and suffer a lot.

“We’ll have days off but the moment we have to play the players set the standards we have to maintain it. We have used an incredible amount of energy.

“We had the FA Cup, Champions League, playing Bayern and Real Madrid in Europe. Being behind Arsenal the energy we spent was massive. It’s normal.

“It doesn’t drop much otherwise the two teams they can hurt us and really hurt us. Playing our game and adapt.

“Then we can arrive after one week to United and Inter in the best condition.”
