Pep Guardiola has confirmed Julian Alvarez will be available for Manchester City after the New Year’s Eve clash with Everton.

Alvarez was a key part of Argentina’s World Cup success earlier this month and returned to Buenos Aires after the final to celebrate in his homeland.

The 22-year-old scored four goals from five starts for La Albiceleste and struck up an incredible partnership with Lionel Messi in Qatar.

Now, Guardiola has told City fans they can expect to see Alvarez back in training soon.

Asked about the striker in his usual media briefing ahead of Saturday’s match, Guardiola said: “He will come back soon. After New Year’s Eve he will be here.”

Many of City’s 16 players who featured at the World Cup have been involved in City’s wins over Liverpool and Leeds United since the end of the tournament.

Kalvin Phillips is yet to play having returned from England’s camp not fully fit. The midfielder was not in the squad for last week’s Carabao Cup win over Liverpool and was an unused substitute against former club Leeds United on Wednesday night.

However, Guardiola says the 27-year-old is back in contention for selection.

“He is coming back fit,” said Guardiola.

“He is in condition to train at a high level and to play, and after we will decide.”

In terms of the challenge posed by Everton, Guardiola has called on his side to be prepared for their quick transition from back to front.

Frank Lampard’s side currently sit 17th in the Premier League after a 2-1 home defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day.

However, Guardiola knows the qualities they possess.

He said: “The last two games against Liverpool and Leeds were so demanding - the high pressing and intensity from both teams. We handled it well.

“I don’t know what Everton is going to do. If they defend deep we have to know how to handle that, the transition from Pickford is so fast.

“The quality is there - we have a feeling Everton have exceptional, really good players. In this period of the calendar it can be a problem. Just three days after the game against Leeds, which was so demanding. We have to be ready again.”
